You are to TYPE a one to two full pages/double spaced, 12 pt. font (Arial or Times New Roman) MLA formatted analysis of a HISTORY, HISTORICAL FICTION, a CLASSIC novel for the second trimester. YOUR ANALYSIS IS DUE NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, February 23rd.
You will be using the questions below to write an analysis based on the….CHARACTERIZATION. Provide a brief summary of your story and the definition of characterization as you introduce your analysis.
1. Define characterization and then identify key characters that are dynamic. What static characters add to the story? How?
2. What forces or circumstances make the main character/s act in a certain way? Explain how this makes them dynamic. (Consider setting, conflict, other characters, etc.)
3. What are the most revealing aspects of the main character/s? (Consider their thoughts, words, and actions.)
4. Do the characters’ actions seem believable within the story? Why or why not?
5. Does/Do the main character/s have a confidant, someone he or she relies on? How important or reliable is this person to the main character/s? Does this person influence the main character/s?

1. Define theme and then identify the theme and provide evidence to support your response. Be thorough in your explanation of evidence.
2. Does the author seem to be saying something about ambition….courage ….greed….jealousy…happiness…goals…etc.? What? Why do you think this?
3. Does the novel show you what it is like to experience racism, loneliness, trauma, heartache, and certain emotions? How?
4. Does the author have a point to make about a specific historical event or a specific experience/problem? Give details to support your answer.

1. Define setting. Where does your novel take place? What effect does the setting have on the characters and the storyline? Answer with evidence and a thoughtful discussion of the evidence.
2. Does the setting expand/increase your understanding of a specific time and place? In other words, have you learned something new about a place or time period because of the setting? What? If not, how could the setting be made better?
3. Is the setting new, unusual, creative or thought provoking? Why or why not? Do you think it adds to the message/theme of the novel? Does it help express the theme? Why or why not?

1. Define plot and then identify the conflict/conflicts. What external or internal conflict affects the main character/s? How do they react to the conflict? Provide evidence and explain it.
2. How is suspense or excitement built into the story? Explain thoroughly.
3. Identify the turning point. How does the turning point change the story? Does it spiral up or down?
4. Are there any twists in the plot? What are they? What do they add to the story?
5. Does the plot follow a basic fiction pattern? Is there a problem/conflict that the main character/s needs to solve? Does the action rise toward the turning point and fall after it. Does the plot resolve itself? If not, what is missing?

You will be using the questions below to write an analysis based on the….STYLE. Provide a brief summary of your story and the definition of style as you introduce your analysis.
1. Define the style of your novel. Does the style of writing the author has chosen fit the novel? Explain with evidence.
2. How does the writing – descriptive phrases, images, and so on – create an overall feeling and help reveal the theme in the novel? Does the mood change throughout the novel? Provide evidence and explain it.
3. Is dialogue or description used effectively? Give two examples and tell me how/why your evidence is effective.
4. Is there an important symbol that adds meaning to the novel? (In “The Monkey’s Paw” the paw symbolized bad fortune and death.) Identify it. How is this symbol represented in different parts of the story?
5. Are there any key figures of speech such as metaphors, similes, hyperbole, antithesis, etc. used in the selection? What do these add to the writing?
