Welcome to fifth grade math!

My name is Jordan Gardina, and I am your child’s fifth grade math teacher. 5th Grade math covers 1) Operations and Algebraic Thinking 2) Operations in Base Ten 3) Fractions 4) Geometry 5) Measurement & Data.

We use Khan Academy in several ways as part of the 5th grade course. The 1st way we use it is Khan Academy Course Mastery. Ideally students should master 100% of the concepts and skills by the end of the year. To help students pace themselves, I write down the fraction of the year that has passed. For example, if we are on day 90 out of 180 school days, I write 90/180=50% Please encourage your child to pace themselves accordingly. Students can work on 5th Grade Course Mastery at any time. As long as they are logged into their school Google account, they never need a username or password. We also use Khan Academy for assignments and lessons. Another way we us Khan Academy is with the MAP Recommended Practice. Students enter their latest MAP scores in each domain and Khan comes up with a learning plan for each student based on their individual scores. This is an amazing tool to help students below and above grade level!

Students will also have a Amplify Desmos account for assignments as well as journals.

Students will also have Fluency Practice accounts to practice their basic facts. This is a basic fact practicing program that is part of our Amplify Desmos Math Program. I ask that students practice their basic facts on 4 different days during our 7 day week. When a student hits 100, they are finished with that operation. 5th Grade only practices 2 operations, multiplication and division.
