Art Immersion (7-8), Amy Wagner
Art Immersion is an opportunity for four 8th grade students who excel in fine arts to experience various workshops related to fine arts and attend a college level theater production with a talk back from the cast and crew. It is held at UW Whitewater and sponsored by the Southern Lakes Advanced Learners Network.
Band (Jazz Band, Summer Band, Solo/Ensemble), John Murphy
Beginner Band is open to all fifth grade students. Students are tested the first week of the school year to determine which instrument best suits their natural gifts. A parent information meeting is held the following week to discuss rental options and the specific goals of the program. No prior music training is necessary. Rehearsal is held twice a week in full group band which is opposite their study hall. Small group half-hour lesson are given during the week for instrument specific instruction. Concerts are performed during the year.
Sixth Grade Band is open to all sixth grade students. Students rehearse twice a week in full group band opposite their study hall. Small group half-hour lessons are given during the week for instrument specific instruction. Concerts are performed throughout the year. Sixth grade band students also perform in pep band concerts.
Advanced Band is open to all seventh and eighth grade students with prior music experience. Students rehearse three times a week in full group band during fifth hour (study hall/electives). Small group half-hour lessons are given during the week for instrument specific instruction. The Advanced Band performs a variety of traditional, classical, pop, and jazz compositions in their various concerts throughout the year, including performances. Students also participate in the district solo and ensemble competition.
Battle of The Books (4-6), Kori Kopp, Jen Phillips, Kristie Loecher
Battle of the Books is a voluntary club for students in grades 4-6. If students choose to participate they read books off of a list. There are 35+ books on the list (all genres). In the spring the team "battles" teams from other schools by answering questions from the books. The team practices on Monday nights in the library until 4pm.
Computer Programing (3-8), Maranda Burks Info
Computer Programming Club is for students interested in programming a computer to following instructions through the use of block code or written code. This club is offered for third grade through eighth grade as two different clubs. Students in the third through fifth grade club learn the basics of programming with the use of Scratch. The middle school club is offered to students in grades sixth through eighth grade. Students learn how a computer works and how to program using written code or block code based on each students experience and programming knowledge. Students new to computer science and coding are encouraged to join along with our experienced coders. It is a fun and rewarding way to learn about the technology that surrounds us.
Drama Club (5-8), Mary Jo Clark, Amy Wagneri
Drama Club is open to students in 5th through 8th grade. Club activity begins with auditions for casting the school play, which are being held November 27th and 28th from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. in room 204. Students only need attend ONE of the days. This year, Drama Club will be presenting The Wizard of Oz. For those who prefer to be behind the scenes, they may sign up to assist with stage management, set and prop design, costuming, sound, hair and make-up, lights, and ushering. Sign up for behind the scenes occurs the week after our cast is set.
English Fest (7-8), Amy Wagner
English Festival is coordinated under the auspices of area school sponsorships and provides students an opportunity to take their love of reading beyond the classroom. Students in 7th and 8th grade read the six English Fest selections and attend book talks based on the novels. Reading begins in the summer and concludes with the first meeting in December. Students then attend a workshop day held at either UW Parkside or Carthage College where they participate in book-related workshops and attend a presentation by one of the authors of the English Fest selections. Book talks are typically scheduled in December, January and February.
Forensics (6-8), Amy Wagner
The Westosha Area Forensics Meet invites students in 6th through 8th grade to participate in competitive speech in categories of solo acting, group interpretations, storytelling, poetry, speech and more. The team is typically formed in February with competition usually held in late April. Communication is generally sent home at the beginning of February.
Math 24 (4-7), Kirk Johnsen, Jen Phillips
Math 24 is a competition based on the math game "MATH 24." The game requires players to get to the number 24 using four different numbers and using multiple operations. The game challenges the students’ skill and speed in solving computational problems. The decks we use for the competition are 4th grade-Single Digits, 5th grade-Double Digits, 6th grade-Exponents (algebra readiness) & Integers, 7th grade-Fractions/Decimals. Tryouts and practices begin after the New Year, and the competitions are in February. Mrs. Phillips will coach the 4th and 5th graders and Mr. Johnsen will coach the 7th and 8th graders.
Science Club (7-8), Greta Hackbarth
Science club will provide a variety of activities (some life science based and other physical science based) to bend your brain and get you thinking like a scientist.
